Viking Fest is just around the corner, and our inboxes are proof that Poulsbo’s beloved Norwegian heritage celebration draws visitors from near and far — along with a lot of great questions! Whether you’re a first-timer or a returning fan, here’s everything you need to plan a smooth, fun-filled weekend, May 15–17, 2026.

Is Viking Fest Free?

Yes! Admission to Viking Fest is completely free. The only thing you’ll need cash or a card for are carnival rides and games, food and drink from the vendors, and the Beer Garden hosted by the Poulsbo Sons of Norway. Come one, come all.

When and Where Does It Take Place?

Viking Fest takes over the heart of downtown Poulsbo along Anderson Parkway and at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park each year on the third weekend of May — timed to coincide with Norway’s Independence Day, Syttende Mai.

Festival hours this year:

Friday, May 15 — Noon to 10:00 pm
Saturday, May 16 — 10:00 am to 10:00 pm
Sunday, May 17 — 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

For the full schedule of events — parade, timber sports, eating contests, live music, and more — check out our complete schedule post.

Where Do I Park?

Parking in downtown Poulsbo during Viking Fest weekend is tight — plan ahead! Several lots are available nearby:

North Kitsap High & Middle School — 1780 NE Hostmark St

Poulsbo Village — Shopping and Medical Center lots, 19351 8th Ave NE

Jensen Street — Street parking, Post Office and Bank of America lots (during non-business hours only)

Keep in mind that Anderson Parkway and the King Olaf parking lots are closed from Thursday at 2 pm through Sunday evening, and Front Street is closed Friday through Sunday. On Saturday, 6th Avenue is also closed from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm for the Road Race and Parade.

For a full parking map and street closure details, visit the Viking Fest Parking & Road Closures page.

Is There a Shuttle?

Yes — and it’s a great option! A Viking Fest shuttle runs throughout the entire festival from North Kitsap High School, with drop-off and pick-up at the corner of Jensen and Iverson (near the Post Office). Fare is just $4 each way per person.

Shuttle hours:

Friday — 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Saturday — 10:00 am to 10:00 pm
Sunday — 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Skip the parking stress and ride in style — it’s quick, easy, and your designated driver won’t have to skip the Beer Garden.

What About Carnival Rides & Wristbands?

The carnival runs all weekend in the King Olaf parking lot and tickets and wristbands are available for purchase right at the carnival. But here’s a tip — if you want to save a little money, discounted wristbands are available for purchase ahead of the event through Thursday, May 15th at two locations: the Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce office (Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm) and Western Red Brewing (Monday 2–8pm, Tuesday–Thursday 2–9pm, Friday–Saturday 12–9pm, Sunday 12–7pm). Stock up before the weekend and skip the line! Full details at vikingfest.org/carnival-and-street-fair.

Are Dogs Allowed?

Viking Fest takes place on public streets and parks, so leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. That said, the event gets very crowded, and much of it is on blacktop — on warm days that can be hard on paws. Use your best judgement to make sure it’s a comfortable experience for your four-legged family member.

Where Should I Stay?

If you’re making a weekend of it (and you should!), Poulsbo and the surrounding Kitsap Peninsula have a range of lodging options. Check out the our lodging page for recommendations. Spots book up fast for Viking Fest weekend, so don’t wait!

How Do I Get to Poulsbo?

Poulsbo is located on the Kitsap Peninsula, just west of Seattle. You can get here by car via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge or the Hood Canal Bridge, by Washington State Ferry from Seattle (to Bainbridge Island) or Edmonds (to Kingston), or even by boat or seaplane for the adventurous. Check out our Getting Here page for detailed directions and tips.
