Come enjoy this Free concert to kick-off July Parks and Recreation Month created by one of our region’s only independent non-profit Steelband programs.
This 30+-piece steel orchestra is made of kids from 7th to 10th grade, and all have been playing steel pans for at least two years prior to joining Steel Dragons. Half of the group rehearses in Edmonds, the other half in Kent, and they join together for this special Concert to make a rare-to-see show in the Pacific Northwest.
The group plays a wide variety of enjoyable and interesting material, including pop, movie themes, classical, salsa, and, of course, calypso and soca styles from the birthplace of the instrument, Trinidad.
Steel Magic Northwest is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded by Executive & Artistic Director, Gary Gibson, an internationally-known steel pan and steelband specialist. Gibson founded the organization in 2014, and they began offering their unique program in 2016. With the groups he directs, Gibson functions as the drummer, which is a common arrangement in the modern steelband.
