Liberty Bay Books started as Shotwell’s Bookstore in 1977 and was purchased by current owner Suzanne Droppert in 1996 — making it Poulsbo’s oldest bookstore and one of its most treasured community institutions. Located at 18881 Front St NE, Suite D, the shop is a must-stop for book lovers of all ages visiting downtown.

The store focuses on new releases and Pacific Northwest-themed books, with a large children’s section curated by the owner. Customers consistently rave about the extensive collection of Nordic fiction and nonfiction, alongside strong representation of historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and children’s literature. The store also emphasizes supporting local authors and indie publishers, prominently showcasing their works at the front of the store. Beyond books, the shop carries cards, puzzles, games, stationery, tote bags, plushies, soaps, candles, mugs, and much more.

Liberty Bay Books is also a community gathering place, hosting regular author events both in-store and around Poulsbo, along with multiple book clubs — store-run and community-organized — that meet on-site throughout the year. Preorders are welcome, with orders typically ready within days.
