Description
Sluys (pronounced “Slys”) Poulsbo Bakery is Poulsbo’s historic from-scratch bakery — home of the Poulsbo Bread since 1974. In 1966, Marion and Loretta Sluys purchased Bauer’s Bake Shop and renamed it Sluys Poulsbo Bakery. Today it is run by Daniel and Stephanie K. Sluys — Daniel is Marion’s son and has been working in the bakery since he was 8 years old. Nearly 60 years later, nothing has changed about the philosophy: everything is handmade in small batches using only fresh ingredients, the old way, because it’s the best way. The full-line bakery produces natural grain, rye and sourdough breads, delicious donuts and pastries, and specialty desserts — all made from scratch. Signature breads like the famous Poulsbo Bread, Brod, Sweet Black, Norwegian Black, and Cardamom Orange sit alongside Old World recipes including Julekake, Stollen, Kransekake, and Fattigman. The pastry case overflows with Danish pastries, Bundough Viking Cups, Trollhouse cookies, cinnamon rolls, fruit pies, decorated cakes, and cupcakes — and the donuts alone are worth the trip. Special orders are welcome, including the legendary 3-pound King Olaf donut, Parker House rolls, and personalized cookies and cupcakes. Voted Best Bakery in Kitsap County for 10 consecutive years. Lines form early and often — arrive when the doors open for the best selection. Open every day 5am–6pm. Closed New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
