Learn about native plants found in Kitsap County, with an emphasis on field identification, plant ecology, basic botany and fun ethnobotanical facts. You will deepen your appreciation of our native Pacific Northwest environment and if you like using native plants in your garden, this course will be of special interest. We will split time between classroom, lab and field trips, learning botanical terminology, major plant families and genera, as well as major species that define commonly encountered community types. Focus is on vegetative field characteristics that allow for plant identification throughout the growing season. Includes field trips to Poulsbo’s Fish Park and Silverdale’s Clear Creek Trail. Participants are responsible for transportation to these sites. Carpooling is encouraged. Be sure to bring water, snacks and comfortable walking shoes; although on maintained park trails, you will be on your feet for extended periods. Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Jim Pojar and Andy MacKinnon is recommended, but not required.
